Attending therapy at a young age has been shown to improve self-confidence, overall mood, and social skills. Your child will learn to strengthen vital skills such as emotional regulation, effective communication, assertiveness, empathy, and self-awareness. I will provide praise and support along the way, as I will help your child believe in themselves and build upon their strengths.
I like to describe myself as a feelings teacher for my littles. You can also frame the conversation as seeking support to enhance their well-being. You might express that you're considering therapy (or counseling as this may be an easier word for kids to understand) to gain insights on how to support them better in areas such as improving relationships, emotional well-being, learning effective ways to express feelings, among others.
The first 2 – 3 sessions are generally spent building rapport with your child and making them feel comfortable. You can expect your child to meet with Kamryn every week for the first month, based on availability and when you are able to make the times work. Change is difficult for anyone, so the length of therapy is dependent upon your child and their needs. I will include you in the process and provide feedback when appropriate. It is important that the parent is involved in order for positive change to occur, so your child and you may be provided tools to use at home and discuss in following sessions.
You will receive some paperwork to complete prior to the first session via your client portal. During the first session, we will use this time to get to know one another and go over your intake form. If you have a teen, they will also complete one. This may include discussing your child's developmental history, strengths, interests, behaviors, and what your child and you would like to see change. I will often ask what you expect from me as your therapist and if your child has been in therapy before. This is a time to build rapport with one another and see if we are a good fit. This session will be held with the clinician and parent(s).
You will be involved in the initial intake session to provide insight and aid in the beginning of the therapeutic relationship. You will be involved throughout the counseling process, so please let me know if any new behaviors, concerns, or change in the home have occurred. We (your teen and I) may invite you to a family session to discuss any concerns or talk about progress. Typically, you will join the last 15-minutes of each session. The therapeutic relationship is important, so unless there are safety concerns or your child has given me permission to share with you, I will respect their confidentiality. However, I will share what tools we are working on or ask for input on what you would like us to focus on. I believe receiving counseling as a parent is important, as well.
Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and therapist. Every therapist should provide a written copy of their confidential disclosure agreement, and you can expect that what you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone. This is called "Informed Consent." Sometimes, however, you may want your therapist to share information or give an update to someone on your healthcare team. By law, your therapist cannot release this information without obtaining your written permission. However, state law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations: suspected past or present abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders and/or if the therapist has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.
We are currently in-network with Aetna, BlueCross and BlueShield of MA and NJ, Cigna, Humana, Medicare, Oxford, Oscar, and United Healthcare. Private pay options are also available. If you opt out of using health insurance, I can provide you with a superbill to submit for reimbursement. Most insurance companies will apply counseling services towards your out-of-network deductible. Please reach out to verify coverage prior to your first session.
